17 Community Hub

Community Hub is a physical location where people gather both to engage with services or activities, and to interact with other people. As such, these are the quintessential 'Third Places'. Community Hub includes a wide range of functions. Indeed, consciously overlapping different functions (pub + cafe + barber + event venue) widens the scope of reasons to visit, and allows people to connect in different contexts, without needing to over-scale the community. There are economic benefits: Community Hubs can combine revenue-generating and for-free activities, diversify revenue and achieve economies of scale. These locations offer a base for many other patterns, including but not limited to 13 Resource Bank, 15 Workshop and activity-based patterns such as 29 Movement Assembly.

18 Street Gathering

People coming together in the street for an event or common purpose (e.g. 3 Revelery, 2 Feasting). While the neighbourhood maybe the primary area of affinity, it may also act as a beacon to pull in others from a wider area. The goal is at least partly to facilitate interactions with others. May or may not require official permission (for example, to close off a street) but are ideally lo-fi and easy to organise without seeking authorisation. May celebrate the completion of some other community goal (e.g. a new 8 Neighbourhood Art work).

19 Event App

A product that tries to deliver conduciveness (via algorithms, search and data signals about personality and preferences). Because it's intended to foster rich off-platform interactions, the on-platform experience itself is usually thin and uninspiring. Event apps highlight the distinction between affinity and connection: Event Apps are good at conduciveness via affinity of interest or lifestage (i.e. we're all interested in hiking, and in our 20s) but can't promise connection (which often requires more than interest or identity based affinity).

20 Lifestage Connection

The happy conjunctions of affinity, conduciveness and need (and potentially free time) that arise from particular life experiences such as school, parenthood, or moving to university. These are moments when it's just easier to form new relationships. That said, the affinity can be superficial, and it may take time to dig deeper. For example, beyond being a new mother, one may not have much in common with other new mothers in the neighbourhood; it takes time to identify other, deeper affinities with people in the same lifestage group.
